There were distinct fashion tribes at the Elle Style Awards, which took place on Monday evening. On one hand you had the glam squad who were polished, preened and perfected to within an inch of their lives and then you had the kooky girls, who were striking out and making a statement on the red carpet.
1. Cheryl Cole
Up first in the glam squad was Cheryl Cole, looking glamorous as ever in a plunging red Alexander McQueen dress. She kept accessories simple with a plain cream clutch bag and took home the award for Best Music.
2. Blake Lively
Gossip Girl star, Blake Lively comes in at a close second for her red carpet style, she wore a strapless electric blue dress by Pucci, with tiered layers. Blake accessorised with a delicate gold chain and clashing plum peep toe heels, looking naturally beautiful with her Best TV Star award in hand.
3. Emma Watson
Emma is loving a nude dress at the moment, after wearing two blush pink Valentino dresses at the Baftas earlier in the week, she opted for a neutral mini dress by Hakaan, with pleats and cut out detailing. At just 20 years old, Emma was presented with the Style Icon award, and it’s clear her dramatic elfin-crop has done wonders for her in the fashion stakes.
4. Thandie Newton
Thandie never seems to have an ‘off day’, so there’s no surprises she looked radiant in a bright purple Louis Vuitton dress, simple, elegant and on trend for spring/summer 2011.
Model Laura Bailey looked stunning at the Elle Style Awards, in a vintage pink dress with clashing yellow Chanel clutch bag, she proved that old-fashioned glamour is still as timeless as ever. With a neat top bun and flawless make-up she had a aura of Grace Kelly around her.
The Kooky Girls
1. Alexa Chung
The host of the evening and keeping everyone in check, was Alexa Chung, a regular cover girl of Elle magazine and style icon in her own right, Alexa opted for a demure blue YSL dress which suited her retro, beatnik style perfectly.
2. Fearne Cotton
Fearne’s outfit was toned down and chic, she wore in a classic LBD with puffed sleeves and a statement necklace. Finished off with a cute box bag and classic hollywood curls, she looked great.
3. Karen Gillan
Style star in the making Karen Gillan worked an androgynous look in navy shorts, cream blouse and flat brogues. It was a risk for the red carpet but luckily, her beautiful red hair and model-like figure meant she pulled it off with panache.
4. Sophie Ellis-Bextor
Sophie Ellis-Bextor worked a power-shouldered dress in pale pink which worked well with her pale skin and glossy brown locks. A quirky oversized bag and cream Mary-Janes finished the look.
5. Alice Dellal
Although I’m not always a fan of Alice’s bizarre fashion statements, she trod the line between punk and glamour quite well at the Elle Style Awards. Wearing a revealing lace maxi dress, and with coiffed blonde hair, she looked much more groomed than usual and it showed that sometimes the less is more approach really works.
1. Ellie Goulding
I love Ellie Goulding’s music, but her outfit on Monday evening won’t be winning awards anytime soon. Ellie’s hair has gone from a gorgeous shade of blonde to a sickly shade of pink, looking like her toner went wrong in the salon. She wore a draped pale pink dress and yet another shade of pink on her lips. All I can say is, don’t match your hair to your dress.
