New York Fashion Week round-up: Spring Summer 2014

Rita Ora for DKNY SS14

Firstly apologies for no blogs for some time! I have been working with the very lovely InStyle.co.uk team covering as their Acting Web Editor for the interim but am now back to my normal routine as a freelancer. And the next few weeks will see some exciting changes to my schedule, but non more so than heading back to view the latest instalment of collections for Spring Summer 2014 at London Fashion Week. However, before the jet set fashionistas hit London they of course contend with the multitude of talent in New York at the bi-annual Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week.

Designers to have already shown consist of Diane von Furstenberg, Thakoon, DKNY and Derek Lam amongst others. Aside from the return of the monochromatic palette there has also been a surge in gingham, yellow and navy. DKNY (who recently shot Rita Ora for their upcoming ad campaigns) is of course celebrating its 25th anniversary this year harking back to its original street style showcasing playful twists on denim, sports luxe and bright colours. The R.I.P singer also made an appearance on the catwalk showcasing Donna Karan’s forthcoming 90s inspired designs for next season.

Victoria Beckham followed suit with a phenomenal addition of bright colours amid crisp white shirts and jet black hues adding in amazing triangle prints and softer and looser silhouettes, making the perfect combination for both work and play for her SS14 range, while husband David Beckham, daughter Harper and Vogue US editor-in-cheif Anna Wintour all watched on from their front row seats.

First Lady fav Alexander Wang also impressed with his clerical collars, super-mini kilts, boxer style shorts, muted palette and stellar front row (Kanye West, Courtney Love and Terry Richardson) while one of my all time favourite designers (who creates amazing red carpet pieces) Monique Lhuillier opted for bright tangerine and cerise tones amongst a contrasting white, cream and gold backdrop… simply stunning.

NYFW continues until Thursday 12th September 2013…

Weekend Wear: SS13 Dungarees For Any Age

Temperatures are reportedly set to soar over the weekend and well into next week so if you are planning on attending a festival, hanging out with friends or joining the family BBQ what better way to stay cool than to adorn the cute 1970s staple; the dungarees.

Most fashion havens are now offering us this classic denim wear in the form of dungaree shorts, however dependant on your age (and of course style) you may already be reading this and running for the hills. But before you do I urge you to read on and think style appropriately about how indeed you would wear this new spring/summer ’13 micro trend…

In your 20s;

OK so you’re not a teenager anymore but that still doesn’t mean you can’t experiment with clothing. Being in your twenty’s is all about expression and fashion that relates to your personality so why not up the fashion ante and opt for dungarees in the denim short variety? They don’t have to be the classic dark denim either as celebs such as Rihanna, Mollie King and Perrie Edwards have all been spotted in this rehashed shape and style. Opt for a fitted crop top for a real 90s vibe or add a tribal printed baggy tee for a real festival vibe. Just remember to add plenty of bulky statement jewellery a la Rita Ora and you’re half way there. Add a pair of converse or Tom style flats for day or take inspiration from Jameela Jamil for evening mixing them with a buttoned up shirt underneath and blazer complete with pointed heels for a quirky style.

In your 30s;

Fashion is fun and not always practical. So when digging out your closet to head to work on a dress down Friday remember that. If you snarl at the thought of dungarees then please take note. Opting for a skirt style dungarees in a different shade or print (say dark denim/black/pastel/stripes or floral for example) can really work to your advantage. Team with a Breton striped or plain top for a more Riviera style chic and add a colourful or statement belt to cinch in your waist and help divert attention away from the top half should you not be too sure on the look. Again this will also look fab should you add a printed or plain shirt underneath plus a blazer and golden cuff for a more serious day time look.

In your 40s;

Fashion is for kids, right? WRONG. You can still look très stylish even if you are 40+. If you have always been a fan of this trend then the best way to replicate it is to opt for the full length dungarees. Think less romper/onesie and more Heidi Klum chic. Add a billowing shirt underneath and strappy sandals with the leg parts rolled up for a fun evening look or in colder weeks try a polo neck underneath teamed with patent loafers for a real style winner.

Get The Celebrity Look: Cara Delevingne, Victoria Beckham And Jourdan Dunn

The Glamour Women Of The Year awards sent the Twitterverse into a flurry yesterday with models and celebrities posting endless ‘selfless’ alongside a barage of media coverage.

However, if you had a personal fav for best dressed celeb then it isn’t hard to emulate their designer look for less.

Take for example model-of-the-moment Cara Delevingne; the 20-year-old confessed ‘wifey’ to BFF Rita Ora opted to sneer the fashion pack in favour of a more laid back chic approach teaming a ‘Squeeze This’ [insert picture of a bottom] slogan tee with tailored trousers and on-trend pointed pumps. The cheeky tee depicting Rihanna’s bum was actually made in collaboration with photographer George Chin who snapped her when she performed at V Festival in 2011. Naturally the reduced £12 tee has sold out at Asos.com, but don’t despair as you can get your hands on a similar range of styles from www.motelrocks.com (as seen above). I love the Lichtenstein-esque one which costs just a mere £25.

Aside from Cara, fashion designer Victoria Beckham also wowed in her Maison Martin Margiela jumpsuit. Vic’s costs a staggering £1,196 from www.net-a-porter.com but you can get your hands on a much cheaper version from high street haven Coast who have created this stylish Rozelda jumpsuit for £115.

Lastly,  I was stunned at just how gorgeous and svelte model Jourdan Dunn looked at the awards in a Victoria Beckham dress (that would have cost in excess of £1,500+). This style suits all shapes as it looks just as great on curves as it does on petite frames. You can also get the look for under £150 with Forever Unique’s new Selfish brand. Just mix their sheer body alongside a black pencil skirt and gold belt for a winning combination.

Happy Shopping!

Get The Celebrity Look: Steal Ellie Goulding’s Style With Motel

As a stylist I’m always looking for the next big thing, especially when it’s something on-trend and (even better for you guys) in budget.

So imagine my delight when this gorge news season piece hit my inbox showing off two trends in one; monochrome and cheques. The tiled ‘Hollyanna’ dress is actually from a selection at Motel, one of the coolest online stores around with a huge array of celeb fans that include Jessie J, Miley Cyrus, Pixie Geldof and Tali Lennox, to name a few!

And with such a purse-pleasing price (just £26!!) I’m sure this key SS13 piece will be the perfect anecdote for every occasion from festivals (wear with a fringed waistcoat) to evening wear (opt for a classic black biker jacket and flat boots for an urban feel).

Singer Ellie Goulding has even adorned hers whilst hanging out backstage and Kilo Kish (NYC’s hottest new music talent) has also been snapped out in it as well. I love the faded detailing and the fact that this T-shirt dress is casual yet stylish enough to wear with trainers, heel or boots (an all round winner).

London Fashion Week: GILES spring/summer 2011 collection

GILES SS12 COLLECTION BACKSTAGE - SWAN HEADPIECE

Over the past 5 days or so I have spent a lot of time with the TONI&GUY PR team heading back stage at shows casting a watchful eye not only over emerging fashion trends, but also spotting trends for hair and make-up for spring/summer 2012.

I was therefore lucky enough to go back stage again with them at GILES, one of this season’s most anticipated shows for London Fashion Week.

Joining Paul Hanlan, who was heading the TONI&GUY team, at the Royal Justice Courts on the strand, one of his colleagues explained that for GILES’ spring/summer show they had actually met the day before to do a hair test with the models and one of them turned up after a long flight from New York, had a quick shower then emerged at the meet with soaking wet hair all pinned up in small twisted buns. When she took her hair down it produced an amazing wave, which when Stylist Katie Grand saw, was convinced was the right hair for this show instantly.

Therefore to achieve this beachy yet wet wave the team simply washed the model’s hair added lots of label.m protein spray and blow out spray – amongst other products – and either held it in a bun for a while before releasing, or teased through the hair with their fingers to create this organic and elasticated effect. Some hair was slightly defused also depending on type.

The aim was simple to keep hair to a minimum and let the clothes do the talking. GILES, of course, did not disappoint. For his spring/summer 2012 collection he showed an array of wearable and desirable pieces, almost couture-like in his construction.

Metallics also played a key role being woven into tops, skirts and dresses with soft prints adorned across silk dresses in cream, white and pale peach.

His palette also changed to vibrant reds and blacks, using lace and amazingly intricate cut out pieces on top of dresses sprawled across the chest and breast bone. Swans were also a major factor being embellished on sheer organza dresses adding red feathers around the neckline.

It seems that this season GILES was going all out finishing with an abundance of models who wore fabulous red and white swan headdresses to accompany his vivacious designs. As the models took to the catwalk for their finale together they all lined up and poised, posing with their arms flanked against their heads which gave the interpretation of a tribute to something as gracious as Swan Lake.

Thank you Team TONI&GUY!
